Class of 2011

Are you aware of the controversy facing this year’s graduating class?  The big question this year is where will their actual graduation ceremonies will be held?  As written by Jon Shirek from 11 alive news, the Cherokee County School Board unanimously voted on January 20th  to continue to hold the Cherokee County high school graduation ceremonies at First Baptist Church in Woodstock.  Unfortunately for the class of 2011, the debate may not end here.  Civil liberties groups like the Americans for the Separation of Church and State in Washington, D.C. have told the board they may file lawsuits to try and force a change in venue.  Rick Steiner, board chair, confirmed that “several” law firms have offered their services free of charge should lawsuits be filed.  “At first, it was a financial issue, and that's what hindered a lot of us, because we're paying taxpayers money" for legal expenses if someone were to sue, "and now this gives us that latitude to pursue this and actually stand up for what we want to do.”  Unless a court intervenes between now and May, the ceremonies will stay at First Baptist Church.
